Hayley Grainger

Hayley Grainger joined the Dallas Symphony Orchestra as Associate Principal Flute in September 2022.

As an orchestral musician, Grainger has performed as guest principal with the Detroit Symphony, Knoxville Symphony, and as solo piccolo and in the sections of the Kansas City Symphony, Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra and Dallas Opera. Grainger spends her summers playing Second Flute and Piccolo with the Boston Festival Orchestra. She has previously held positions with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Chattanooga Symphony.

As an educator, Grainger has given guest master classes and performances at Boston University, the University of North Texas, University of Texas at Arlington, Texas Christian University, as well as through the Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention, Rochester Flute Association, and Austin Flute Society. In addition to collegiate teaching, Grainger enjoys working with middle and high school students and has served as a mentor with the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, as well as guest appearances at local high schools. Previously, Grainger served as the Flute Instructor at the Eastman Community School of Music.

Grainger is an active chamber musician, recently working with Angélica Negrón on a curated recital for the 2022 Women in Classical Music Symposium, premiering new chamber works with Voices of Change, and appearing with Fine Arts Chamber Players in 2024. Passionate about reaching her community through music, Grainger frequently performs at hospitals and senior living facilities both independently and through initiatives like DSO Cares. 

As a soloist, Grainger is a prize winner in numerous competitions, including the 2021 National Flute Association Young Artist Competition, the 2021 Cedar Luke Young Artist Competition, the James Pappoutsakis Memorial Competition, the Boston Woodwind Society Doriot Dwyer Flute Competition, the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition and the New York Flute Club Competition.

Her primary teachers and mentors include Elizabeth Rowe, Marianne Gedigian and Linda Toote. Grainger graduated valedictorian summa cum laude from Boston University’s College of Fine Arts in 2013 and served as Marianne Gedigian’s Teaching Assistant while completing her Master’s degree at the University of Texas at Austin. 

Grainger is a Haynes Performing Artist and plays on a rose gold Haynes Fusion.
